Preservation Virginia is seeking a full-time Education Specialist to develop and implement on-site educational programs, outreach programs, and other resources for families, K-12 students and teachers at Historic Jamestowne and for the Jamestown Rediscovery Archaeological Project.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Planning, developing, and conducting on-site and outreach educational programs and activities related to Jamestown's history, the archaeology, and artifact collections of James Fort and related topics;
Creating and implementing daily activities to maximize the visitor experience;
Developing school tour content and leading tours. Also hiring, training, and supervising tour guides, regularly assessing their teaching, as appropriate;
Coordinating the development of educational activities related to public programs with Colonial Williamsburg's program staff;
With the Director of Operations & Public Programs, working collaboratively with Historic Jamestowne's on-site partner, NPS, and outside groups to create educational programs;
Developing and maintaining relationships and partnerships with local educators and other educational organizations and groups;
Monitoring and evaluating programs and initiating changes to creatively address the needs and wishes of the visiting public;
Producing succinct and compelling content for print and online materials, and working with the Director of Operations & Public Programs to promote programs both on and offsite, as well as virtually;
Scheduling and training volunteers working on educational activities;
Teaching and presenting programs periodically, including leading training and professional development sessions for volunteers, teachers, and peers, as well as making presentations to community groups and organizations;
Maintaining records and tracking expenditures and revenue related to educational programming and compiling information for program reports.
Qualifications:
Undergraduate degree in American history, education, archaeology or a combination of these studies. 3+ years experience working in a museum or at an historic site. A demonstrated record of designing and implementing educational programs and curriculum, both on-site and outreach, for families, students, and teachers.
Master's in museum education, American history, archaeology or related field highly desirable. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work independently as well as an integral team member.
Must be able to positively interact and provide services to diverse populations and age groups. Proficiency in MS Word, Outlook & Excel for curriculum development and reporting. Weekend and evening work is required, so candidates should have flexibility to accommodate this schedule.
